Creator of Mortal Kombat explains how the saga logo was born
Today, one of the most iconic logos in the world of video games is that of Mortal Kombat, which puts as the protagonist a kind of dragon that calls fighters to combat. And with that, some fans wonder how their origin was, so one of the creators of the franchise already answered such a singular issue.
On Twitter , John Tobias announced the original hand-drawn logo that he created for the first game of Mortal Kombat and deepened in his background. The confusion was also clarified a bit with resembling a seahorse, something that was a point criticized at the time.
There is a recently discovered image of the first drawing of the #Mortalkombat Dragon icon. I designed the icon as a symbol of our game and its fictional tournament.
The inspiration to use a dragon as a symbol of the fictional tournament came from ‘Dragon Attack’, which was in dispute as a title of our game before the change. Here is my approximate sketch with marquee logo marker.
I had been thinking of creating an icon to represent the fictional tournament, but also to score the game with a symbol... like Superman's S or the Batman bat symbol. I used the sketch dragon of the side panel of my cabinet to inform the appearance of the dragon icon as our symbol.
The final design of the icon was an attempt to replicate the Yin Yang symbol, which represented the balance of the furies, a central part of the early MK fiction.
It hurts to comment that this logo almost threw up after the confusion of Tobias sister, who thought the dragon was a seahorse. However and fortunately, the design remained intact.
